Meet Us

Feature 1

We are a small, family-run flower farm that focuses on growing speciality cut flowers for our Charlottesville community…

My name is Sarah, and my family and I started Foothills Flower Farm in March 2020- I know, quite a crazy year! Our flower farm is located in the foothills of Virginia outside the city limits of Charlottesville. After 10+ years of working as a birth doula and a midwife, I found my calm and enjoyment in harvesting and arranging flowers…and this hobby has sprung into a business! My favorite part is starting seeds, harvesting flowers and designing market bouquets and wedding arrangements using 100% of flowers grown in our field. In addition, my husband Pete teaches urban farming full time at Charlottesville High School and was the 2020 Floret Scholarship Winner in which now ⅓ of the mini farm at CHS is for cut flower production in addition to vegetables and fruits.  On our farm, Pete oversees much of the soil work, irrigation and construction projects such as our raised beds and greenhouse.

We focus on growing specialty cut flowers while using sustainable growing practices for the local market.  Our field of blooms bursts open all throughout our growing season, from fragrant sweet peas and heirloom tulips that begin in late April through the exquisite and eye-catching dahlias through mid-October.  The summer in between is when our field is at its peak, with rainbows of color in so many heat-loving varieties like playful zinnias, airy cosmos, delphinium, larkspur, and sunflowers.

We care about the environment and have a deep respect for nature. Though we are not USDA organic certified, we utilize organic growing practices. We are advocates for buying and selling local, reducing our carbon footprint as much as possible.  In addition, all of our packaging is either recyclable or compostable.

We are dedicated to the seasonal flower movement. We believe in educating those who want to learn more about purchasing seasonally and we are so excited to support floral designers and brides who want to incorporate locally grown blooms.

Giving Back

When I was a student midwife in 2014, I had the opportunity to spend a summer in Manila, Philippines learning and working with the local midwives at Shiphrah Birthing Home . The strong mothers whom I served and the midwives I worked alongside of taught me so much about kindness and life lived in true community simply by just watching the way they moved through their day to day lives. Their kindness, overflowing generosity, and how they lived in constant community is forever held in my heart.

Shiphrah birthing home provides prenatal education and care, labor and delivery, and postpartum care to mothers and babies who come from impoverished backgrounds. The midwives of Shiphrah ensure that the mothers receive safe and dignified care in a home-like environment.

Foothills flower farm continues to give a generous portion of our proceeds to support Shiphrah Birthing Home in Manila, Philippines since our business began back in March 2020. When you purchase flowers from us, you know that a small portion of your purchase is going to help mother’s in need in a very real and tangible way!
